cPanel Help and Tips

Getting going with your very own e-mail account is the first thing that many people do when they finally get that welcome e-mail in their inbox. From cPanel you have the ability to add extra e-mail accounts to your main account. You can setup as many as you have room and bandwidth to support - but let us not get ahead of ourselves.

How about we just start with creating one fresh e-mail account from cPanel?

1. To access the mail menu, click on the icon above the word mail on the main screen of your cPanel interface.

2. Click on the words “Add/Remove Accounts” to enter the Mail Account Maintenance screen.

3. Click on the words add account and then enter the name of the account, the account’s password, and the account’s quota (amount of disk space the account can use) in their respective blank fields.

4. Almost done! To finish up the job just click on the button labeled “create” to create the account.

Now you can get going with your very own you at yourowndomain.com e-mail address. Pass it to friends, family, business contacts. The options are totally left up to you.

Over the month of November I am going to be going over some basics for all of our cPanel users here at Lunarpages. Each Wednesday I’ll be coming a new topic so stay tuned, and if you have any suggestions be sure to leave a comment and let us know.

Truck Driver Crashes into Rackspace Datacenter

datacenter-truck.jpg

Could this be a new hacker tool?

Do you remember the power mishap in July that brought down 365 Main, the San Francisco datacenter? A similar incident took place at Rackspace, a Dallas, Texas Web host which serves several local companies.

I doubt that I will ever get around to building my own datacenter, but if I do, it will not be close to a highway. Yep, the security implications that this event brings to the surface are disturbing.

Now what?

How about a new cPanel feature: Truck Redirect

Here at Lunarpages, we’re really keen on blog hosting, and we really try to tailor our website hosting plans to that medium, offering a variety of free tools to cover all your blogging needs. And indeed, blogging is a very important task that many businesses and webmasters use to increase SEO exposure and to provide a link between their top-level execs and the customers who trust them for new information and connection. A blog can make the difference between a devoted audience ready to buy, and a poor website with little to no interactivity. D’awww.

With so many blogging options to choose from at Lunarpages, this can sometimes make it hard to choose just one for your website! So I thought it might be helpful to compare two of the most popular options for blogging here at Lunarpages to show you their strengths.

wordpress.JPG
As the current most popular blogging platform in the world, WordPress actually has done a lot for blogging tools in the contemporary market, offering hosted solutions as well as fully-customizable host-anywhere versions, similar to what we provide. You can add themes and layouts and have the ability to easily create your own templates or download others. In fact, Lunarpages uses WordPress for our own blog that you’re reading right now! Small world, I know. Plus, we have many WordPress layouts you can download for free and our crazy designer Todd is always adding new ones to our Newsletter and blog!

Another cool addition, WordPress also offers built-in SEO tools and a sweet dashboard that encompasses many aspects of easy blog design and development: for example, from this dashboard you can monitor your site’s incoming links and referrers, see your blog’s hits and track visitors, add/edit/manage sidebar widgets (for bio texts, images, Flickr galleries, IM sessions, and more), as well as customize the CSS of your blog’s design or choose from a variety of pre-made layouts immediately available for download. You can also do all the great things other blogging tools can do, such as creating private posts, adding tags, managing outbound links, and a ton more. WordPress is such a great choice for building your first blog (there’s little to no learning curve) or taking your company’s blog to the next level, and can be installed with one click via Fantastico in your CPanel. Need help with that? Call us up and we’ll get you started.

b2evo.JPG
As one of the newer blogging tools on the market, b2evolution is open source software, meaning it’s 100% free for download and install! It has all those great features you’d expect from a traditional blogging solution (posting groups and tools, templates, etc) but also takes blogging one step further with really awesome AntiSpam software to block spammers, comments, and even users if necessary; a multiple blogging feature that allows you to host any number of blogs, such as photo blogs, personal or business blogs, SEO blogs, web hosting blogs (like us!), article blogs, etc; multiple authors and webmasters; integrated stats with graphs for details on robots, RSS feeds, daily hits, and more; as well as even more features that you can check out by visiting their site. Though b2 needs to be downloaded, Lunarpages is one of their recommended hosts, so all necessary software can be integrated with any of our packages seamlessly.

Other Blogging Tools

While the two blog hosting tools above are definitely the most popular, many people prefer to use CMS or the other tools we provide, such as pMachine Free and NucleusCMS, all of which you can install via Fantastico in one-click. Plus, blogging tools such as LiveJournal and other popular blogging platforms can be used without qualms. If you’re confused or need to know if your favorite blogging solution will work on LP, give us a call and we’ll help you sort it out. :)

5 Things You Can Do With ASP

Posted by advertolog at Thursday ~ November 11, 2007 to SEO

by Tiara Rea

ASP is a truly affordable addition to Lunarpages’ already incredible prices, so I thought I’d give you Lunartics 5 helpful tips for cool things you can do with this amazing scripting language. ASP is pretty amazing technology, so if you’re ready to learn to script, read on!

1. Form Validation

Ever finished filling out a Contact Form on a website but were promptly greeted with a message informing you that you must fill out the “phone number” field in order to submit the form? Well that’s a perfect example of form validation, and it’s a really cool feature you can add to any form on your website with ASP. For ecommerce websites, this is an incredible tool that can assure you get the information you need to follow up on sales leads, that you’re contacting the proper people with the correct information, and that you keep up to date with your customers’ emails, phone numbers, websites, and addresses. Using ASP makes adding form validation easy. There are many great tutorials online that you can choose from, all completely free! That’s another benefit of ASP.

2. Cookies

Mmmm…cookies… Okay wait, not those kinds of cookies; I’m talking about the small file cookies that can be embedded into a user’s browser. Cookies can be a great addition to a site if you’d like to add a personal touch to say “Hello Mike” when Mike Smith logs in or can even be great tool to track visitor behavior on your site. Cookies can track a customer from their first click on your site to their purchase on your order page. For example, for our Affiliate Program, we use cookie tracking to track each sale our affiliates earn – in this case, after the user clicks on their link, a cookie is stored to track their sale. Adding cookies with ASP can be a valuable solution for social networking sites, major ecommerce ventures, and even personal websites.

3. Ad Rotation & Management

Are you selling adspace or plan to do so in the near future? Ever wonder how sites with multiple advertisers easily rotate and manage these ads? Well, now you can add that functionality to your own site with a simple ASP Ad Rotation script. This will help you sell advertising space on your own site and maintain which advertisers get rotated when and even for how long, which can mean the difference between a mediocre site with several cluttered banners amd a successful business managing ads in an professional manner.

4. Printer-Friendly Pages

Printers are not always able to format webpages exactly as you’d like and since everybody has a different printer, sometimes you can end up with a printed page full of sidebar banners, a second page with text from the footer, or even just the web address, and even a last page with jumbled content. Especially if there is important information that your visitors need to be able to easily print, adding a Printer-Friendly Page script with ASP will ease the frustration and add a nice alternative to banging your head against the printer. ;)

5. Username Suggestion

If you suffer from Common Name Syndrome like our good friend Mike Smith, you’ve probably often had this problem. You just clicked submit on a form to get a new username for a popular social networking site. You really wanted to get “mikesmith”. Unfortunately, you get an error in bolded red letters that says, “Username Taken”. The form doesn’t offer you any suggestions, and now you have to wonder if “smithmike” is also taken. Okay, maybe you’re more creative than that (think mikepsmith or mikesmith07) but for the creatively-challenged this kind of guessing game could take forever and cause a great deal of frustration for your visitors. ASP to the rescue! Just install a username suggestion script which will help your customers come up with popular alterations of available usernames directly related to their searches.

These are only 5 cool things you can do with ASP, and there are tons and tons more if you check out “ASP” in Google. Even a simple search through LunarForums could yield some extra, awesome results!

Help Setting Up Sub Domains

cPanel Help and Tips

Getting going with a sub domain inside of cPanel isn’t that difficult of a task to do - if you know the right steps to take to make it happen. The sub domain option allows you to add sub domains to your account. This feature is very useful as people can access subdirectories in your site through a simpler domain name than using your domain name and directory names.

This URL:

http://www.lunarpages.com/bob/

is harder to remember and access than:

http://bob.lunarpages.com

Here are the steps in setting up a sub domain from your Lunarpages cPanel:

1. To access the sub domain maintenance menu, click on the icon above the word sub domains on the main screen of your cPanel interface.

2. Enter the prefix for the sub domain in the first blank field. This will be what comes before your domain name (such as “bob” in our earlier example). Click the “add” button. If the sub domain was added successfully, the following will appear (except sub.domain.com will be the prefix you are using, and your domain): The subdomain, sub.domain.com has been added.

3. Now go back by clicking on “Go Back” on the current web page.

4. To make the sub domain work, select it from the drop box next to setup redirection and click on setup redirection.

5. Enter the URL which you wish the sub domain to display in the blank field, and click on save.

Now you should be all set with your sub domain. Of course, if you ever have any problems you can always come talk with support@lunarpages.com for grade A quality support.

picky-domains.jpgDomain Squatter Wants To Give His Domains To Google In Exchange For A Job

Creative minds write not a normal application, they will ensure that you will be attentive to them!

That’s the first line of an open letter posted on adwordsgoogle.de, docsgoogle.de and six other domain names. The sites’ owner and letter’s author, German IT guy Sebastian Klein, wants to give his domains to Google in exchange for a job.

What’s better than desperate pleas? Desperate pleas in hilariously broken English! We can only hope Klein is using some bad translation engine to create the English version of his letter. He might have done well to hire a proofreader.
